This very large producer (with a 950,000-case capacity) was founded in 1879 and was for many years best known for sparkling wines. In 1950 it was incorporated, and today the Mitjans group, the main stockholder, directs winemaking policy. The old winery in Santiago has been upgraded, and in 1990 a major investment was made in Lontue in the Maule Valley, which is now the centre of sparkling wine production. Valdivieso makes more than 90% of Chile's sparkling wine, by the methode champenoise. The company's Brut and Nature cuvees are made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It currently owns 120ha (300 acres) in the Maule Valley. Valdivieso is moving into table wines, and the future of the company in this field looks promising. It offers Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc as well as a blend of Chardonnay and Semillon. All Valdivieso's wines are made for export only.
