This highly innovative wine venture began in 1979 with the purchase of an old vineyard at Curico in the Maipo Valley by the Torres wine family of Spain. An ultra-modern winery was built to produce 100,000 cases of wine a year. Torres introduced temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, modern winepresses and small French and American oak barrels into Chile. In the vineyard trellising and irrigation have led to improvements in quality and their methods have been widely copied. From the 220-ha (545acre) vineyard, Torres concentrates on Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon and also makes sparkling Brut Nature by the methode champenoise. Close to 75% of production is destined for export.
