This famous vineyard dates from 1750. It covers 220ha (545 acres) of the 2,200-ha (5,435-acre) estate which was expropriated in the 1960s, only to be reestablished parcel by parcel by the founding family, Eyzaguirre-Echenique, in the late 1970s. This exercise took its financial toll, however, and led to the acquisition in 1988 of 50% of the company by Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. This resulted in the modernization of Los Vascos, and Lafite's technical staff implemented new winemaking programmes. Cabernet Sauvignon represents more than half the production. Lafite's influence surfaced with the 1990 vintage when a Reserve Cabernet made its debut. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the only other wines made. Production hovers at around 200,000 cases a year.
