This old vineyard in Santiago (established in 1874) was operated successfully until divorce in the Zavala family created problems that went unresolved until the President of Chile, whose nickname was the Lion of Tarapaca, decreed that the property should be named Ex-Zavala. The 110-ha (270-acre) vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon and other red grapes, and Chardonnay has been added. Most of the 100,000case production is sold in South America under the Gran Tarapaca and other labels.
