Exports increased from 25,000 cases in 1985 to 500,000 cases in 1994, and Santa Rita quickly became a leading exporter to both the UK and North America. Founded in 1880, the company is now publicly owned and has two main wineries adjacent to its vineyards in Maipo and Lontue (in the Maule Valley). Recently developed vineyards in Casablanca increased Santa Rita's total holdings to 336ha (830 acres). The company has invested heavily in modern equipment, and its cellars now house more than 8,000 French oak barrels. Export wines are sold under three labels: the 120 range of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are reasonably priced wines; estate?bottled Riservas are next up the ladder; and Medalla Real is the winery's prestige label, which is headed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
