In 1988 four partners with vast experience in the wine trade formed the Discovery Wine Company to make wines for export only. More than half the 85-ha (210-acre) estate vineyard in Curico in the Maipo Valley is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with the rest including Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Nogales is the label for lower-priced wines, and Villa Montes the top-of-the range export brand. Montes Alpha designates winemaker Aurelio Montes' deluxe Cabernet Sauvignon, which he ages in new oak barrels, The Montes winery has a production target of 80,000 cases. |
