The diversity of Australian wines is accentuated by vintage variation. Growing-season conditions, contrary to common belief, have a marked impact on style (first and foremost) and quality in all the premium regions. It is true that poor vintages in the European sense - low natural sugar and high levels of mildew and botrytis - are rarely, if ever, encountered. But vintages do vary: each has its particular character, easily identified by an experienced taster.
