In cooler parts of the country such as Neuchatel, where the vineyards reach up to 580m (1,900ft), height above sea level helps to determine the ripeness of the crop and the date of the harvest. The climate is tempered by Lake Neuchatel, and the limestone hills north of the lake can, in good vintages, produce attractive Pinot Noir reds and ros6s. The Chasselas grown here makes lively, slightly sparkling white wine.
