Vino de mesa is the basic grade of table wine, and may come from anywhere in Spain. It may not show area of origin or a vintage date. These are the cheap branded wines. Vino de mesa followed by a regional name is an intermediate grade between simple vino de mesa and vino de la tierra, There are 28 regions (comarcas) that have the right to use their local name to describe the wine, for example, Vino de Mesa de Betanzos. This category is known colloquially as vino comarcal (local wine). This naming format is also used for wines that fall outside the DO system, for example, Yllera in Castilla?Le6n, which may append the name of their province or autonomia, as in Vino de Mesa de Castilla?Leon. This allows a vintage date on the label.
