African Distillers (Afdis) This company owns three vineyards ? Green Valley near Mutare, Bertrams at Gweru and Worringham near Bulawayo ? and buys in grapes. It is experimenting with several new vine varieties which might prove suitable in Zimbabwe's difficult climate.
Monis Wineries Monis has vineyards in the Mukuya Valley, south of Marondera, 75 minutes' drive east of Harare, and buys in grapes. The winery was built in 1978 after exhaustive technical research in Europe and California. As well as still red and white styles and late-harvest and fortified wines, in 1993 Monis launched an oakmatured, 'traditional?method" sparkling wine in Extra Dry and Medium styles. Initial sales are forecast at 40,000 cases in the local and export markets.
Philips Central Cellars The Zimbabwean negociant operation buys in most of its wines, but also has a 7?ha (17acre) vineyard at Enterprise, 35km (22 miles) from Harare. Situated in a high and relatively cool position with a moderate annual rainfall, the vineyard would appear more suitable for viticulture than some other Zimbabwean sites. Philips's Nyala and Flame Lily brands sell well to the home market, and to Kenya and Zambia. Philips is now starting to bottle what could be some of Zimbabwe's most interesting white wines, made from Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Bukettraube.
