North African vineyards are all near the coast, with the better-quality wines coming from the hills a little way inland. Morocco is the only country with an Atlantic coast, and the cooling effect of this benefits its wines; as in the other countries, however, huge areas of the coastal vineyards have been uprooted. In the hills the vines may grow up to 1,200m (3,960ft), the cooler climates found at high altitudes are crucial to the quality of the wines.
