The southern peninsula has a large number of appellations. On a high plateau near Tripolis, the Moscophilero grape makes the aromatic white wine of Mantinia, while Nemea, near Corinth, makes a fruity red wine from the St George. Although normally dry, sweet red Nemea can also be made.
The appellation Patras is given to the dry white wine from the Rhoditis grape grown on the hillsides around the town of the same name. Muscat of Patras (or Pion de Patras) is a dessert wine, a vin de liqueur, while Mavrodaphne of Patras is a fortified red wine of about 15º alcohol made from the grape of the same name, and well matured in oak.
