The majority of English wine is white, light, with a flowery aroma and good acidity; some wineries are beginning to make sparkling and red wines. Most are drunk young, although some can age successfully for up to ten years in bottle.
German crossings such as Muller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Reichensteiner and Schonburger account for nearly half the vineyard area. The frost-resistant hybrid Seyval Blanc accounts for around 13% of plantings, but the industry is still young and rife with experimentation; more than 30 other varieties are recorded.
Plantings of red-wine varieties such as Pinot Noir, Triomphe d' Alsace, Dornfelder and Dunkel-felder remain small, although both red and rose wine are made.
