More than half a million people grow grapes for wine in France, and around 100,000 of them grow grapes for AOC wines. Not all of these growers actually make wine: some sell their grapes to larger concerns, others take their grapes to a wine-producing cooperative. Those who make wine may not sell it under their own name; they may prefer to pass on their wine in bulk to a negociant, who blends it with wine from other sources and bottles it under his own label.
Different parts of France offer wines to the consumer in varying ways.
