Storage can add taints to glasses. New glasses packed in cardboard will smell and taste of cardboard until very thoroughly washed, and the habit of storing glasses in their boxes should be discouraged for the same reason. If you hire or borrow glasses, perhaps when having a large party, check them before use for detergent and storage smells.

The best place to store glasses is a closed cupboard outside the kitchen, which will inevitably have a steamy atmosphere. Stand the glasses the right way up, or hang them from racks. If stood upside-down on their bowls they will pick up taints from the shelf. Take them out well before the meal so that they lose any "cupboard" smells.
