Many an important winetasting has been marred by dirty glasses. They need not be visibly dirty: the film left by detergents can be undetectable by eye or nose when the glass is -empty, but it can react with wine (or water) to produce a bad taste. This is a common problem in hotels and restaurants which use dishwashers, and it has happened (to the immense embarrassment of host and butler) more than once even at dinners at important wine chateaux.
