The South-western Region, which is close to the Greek border, is by far the hottest. Its specialty is the red Melnik, grown around the town of that name. The wineries at Petrich and Harsovo, while improving, are not among Bulgaria's best and do not really do justice to Melnik's potential. The Cabernet Sauvignon from here is very soft and ripe.
