Two-thirds (in 1992) of grapes are grown on North Island still, despite its climatic unsuitability, but the trend is for producers to look south for their grapes, either by acquiring or planting vineyards, or buying in.

South Island
Although originally planted at the same time as North Island, most vineyards fell into disuse, and only during the 1970s did winemakers appreciate the potential here
