Between Graz and the Slovenian border, Weststeiermark has only 280ha (692 acres) of vines, and produce Schilcher, a rose made from the indigenous Blauer Wildbacher grape. It is characterized by very high acidity and, according to the skill of the winemaker, can be vibrantly refreshing or uncomfortably sharp. It is best drunk young. Its rarity and modishness make Schilcher sought-after and expensive. Some of the best examples of Schilcher come from Erich Kuntner, Gunter Muller and Christian Reiterer.
