South of Neusiedlersee-Hugelland, this area is 95% planted with red grapes, notably Blaufrinkisch. There has been much experimentation with barrique-ageing, and Blaufrankisch is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to give rather tannic and earthy wines. This region may become one of Austria's best sources of structured red wine.
Best producers include Engelbert Gesellmann, Anton lby, Hans Igler, Paul Kerschbaum and Franz Weninger.
