This area extends on either side of the Danube and its tributary the Krems. Riesling and Gruner Veltliner grown on volcanic soil give wines of similar style to the Wachau which, if not as powerful, can be more elegant.

Best producers include Malat-Brundlmayer, Mantler-hof (making a white from the rare Roter Veltliner grape), Josef NigI and Fritz Salomon.
